Events in 2007
November: Co-editor of a new book, Evolutionary Computation in Practice, scheduled to be published by Springer in November. Author of one chapter in the book, co-author of Introduction and another chapter. The book is a collection of cutting-edge papers on real-world applications of new optimization techniques.
October 27: Speaker at a day-long Smithsonian symposium entitled “Government and Science: Co-evolving a Sustainable Future for the United States and Globalization.” This is the fourth year of this symposium series. In the past each session has been attended by more than a hundred Washington, DC policymakers. The event is hosted by the Smithsonian Institute, and will take place in Smithsonian facilities. September: Lead author on an article on optimization in World Trade magazine. The article describes innovative techniques for improving the performance of global supply chains. The issue’s web address:

July 12: Speaker on decision design in a technical speaker series at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom.
July 8-11: Track organizer and speaker at the 2007 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference in London. I am co-organizer of the Evolutionary Computation in Practice track, and participated in four of the sessions in that track. GECCO 2007’s web site: http://www.sigevo.org/gecco-2007/
July 8: Speaker at an energy workshop at the 2007 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference in London. Described the oil well workover strategy we used in a project for a mid-sized energy company.
July: Began a four-year term as an elected member of the SIGEvo (Special Interest Group on Evolutionary Computation of the Association for Computing Machinery) Executive Committee.
June 11: Keynote speaker at the tenth annual conference on Evolutionary Computation and Global Optimization in Poland. The talk was titled “Evolutionary Computation in Practice: Twelve Lessons Learned.” A more detailed version of this talk is a chapter in our upcoming book Evolutionary Computation in Practice (see above).
May 3: With VGO Associate Rod Sipe, gave an invited presentation on “Simulation and Risk Management” for the American Petroleum Institute Risk Management Committee meeting in Chicago.
April 19: Invited technical speaker on simulation and uncertainty at the Institute for Defense Analyses, located in Virginia near Washington, D.C.
April 13: Invited panelist for a plenary lunch session in Houston at a Digital Oil Field conference of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. The panel topic was data mining applications in the energy industry.
March: An article entitled “Embracing Complexity,” written by the magazine editor, appeared in Supply and Demand Chain Executive magazine.
